On this blog, we’ve previously discussed the benefits of facilities outsourcing, and how facilities management consultants can help you decide when to outsource. We concluded that you will save time, money, and increase the quality of work that you’re receiving if you choose to outsource.
Once you’ve spoken to FM consultants about which resources you can outsource, you need to start thinking about how you can get the most out of your contractors, and how they can be best utilised. This is our quick guide to doing just that.
From the offset, you need to set out a clear set of terms with your contractor. If you can’t guarantee them regular hours, then ensure that they are aware of that. If their hours are likely to be unsociable, then tell them from the beginning. There will still be plenty of good contractors willing to do the work you offer, but they’ll be happier to do it if they have realistic expectations.
Say, for example, you hire a security guard on a contractual basis. It’s plausible that they might be positioned near the reception area while they’re on shift. Do they know how to handle basic reception duties if the receptionist is busy or not at the desk? It can be worthwhile checking, and maybe even offering very simple training for these kinds of tasks.
The great thing about contractors, in departments such as IT, is that you can utilise their specialist knowledge for a short period of time without having to hire them as a full-time employee. This is something that should be taken advantage of at all opportunities. They’re being paid based on the time they spend with you, so ask questions and learn from them while they’re in the office. If a common problem arises again in the future, you’ll then hopefully have the knowledge to solve it yourself.
